Second Wind is about two men who can’t breathe. Carl, who works in the tobacco industry, and Ed, a steel worker, have end-stage emphysema, an ultimately fatal, lung disease. Medicine and rehabilitation no longer offer them any relief nor hope. They can have a lung transplant but donors are rare and transplants are complicated. Their only chance is to undergo a new surgery called Lung Volume Reduction — an experimental procedure that’s been known to help if it doesn’t kill you first.
